HISTORY

In 744 (Nara Period)
Mount Takao was founded as a sacred mountain by the high priest Gyoki.

In 1375 (Nanboku-chō Period)
Shungen of Daigoji Temple in Kyoto entered the mountain and restored Yakuo-in Temple.

From 1603 (Edo Period)
Many worshippers from Edo (Tokyo) visited, and it developed as a sacred mountain of faith.

In 1927 (early Showa Period)
The cable car began operation, establishing Mount Takao as a tourist destination.

In 2007 (Heisei 19)
It received a three-star rating in the Michelin Guide, becoming a globally popular mountain.

Mount Takao offers a total of eight hiking trails suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced hikers.
Here are two popular options among international visitors: the “Classic Route” and the “Nature Immersion Route.”

Classic Beginner-Friendly Route (Trail No.1)

This is the main approach to Yakuo-in Temple, with paved paths that make it easy and safe for beginners. By using the cable car or lift, you can reach the top more casually while enjoying local specialties such as “Tengu-yaki” and sesame dumplings, as well as highlights like the Octopus Cedar and Yakuo-in Temple.
